# Best Hot Dogs in Oslo: Where to Go and What It Costs

The hot dog to get in Oslo is at Syverkiosken, the red wooden kiosk by Alexander Kiellands plass: a sausage in a bun or in lompe (a soft potato flatbread) costs 36 NOK, and it is open every day until 23:30. The one decision left is where you want to eat. You order at an outdoor counter there, so for a seat and a plate go to [Haandtryk](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/haandtryk.md), which opens on weekdays only.

## Four places for a sausage, compared by price and opening hours

| Place | What you get | Price | Open | From Oslo S, the central station |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Syverkiosken](https://www.syverkiosken.no/), Maridalsveien 45B | Simmered sausage in a bun or lompe, toppings priced one by one | 36 NOK plain, 57 to 63 NOK with the owner's toppings | Mon to Fri 11:00 to 23:30, Sat and Sun 12:00 to 23:30 | Bus 54 or 34, 17 to 18 minutes door to door, or a 31-minute walk |
| [Haandtryk](https://www.haandtryk.com/), Skippergata 3 | Plate of three sausages with fries, onion rings, red cabbage and three dips, at a table | 379 NOK | Tue to Fri 14:00 to 22:00 (its Norwegian page adds Mon), kitchen 15:00 to 20:00, closed Sat and Sun | 8-minute walk |
| [Haralds Vaffel](https://www.haraldsvaffel.no/), Olaf Ryes plass 3 | Sausage inside a waffle with mustard, ketchup and crispy onion | 119 NOK on [Wolt](https://wolt.com/en/nor/oslo/restaurant/haralds-vaffel) | Autumn hours: Mon to Fri 12:00 to 20:00, Sat and Sun 11:00 to 20:00 | Tram 12, 15 or 18, 14 to 15 minutes door to door, or a 21-minute walk |
| [Lille Grill](https://www.julivinterland.no/utstillere/lille-grill) at Jul i Vinterland, Spikersuppa | Sausages grilled over a fire, until 3 January 2027 | Not published | [Market hours](https://www.julivinterland.no/info/hva-er-apningstidene-pa-jul-i-vinterland) up to 20 December: Mon to Thu 12:00 to 20:00, Fri 12:00 to 21:00, Sat 10:00 to 21:00, Sun 10:00 to 20:00 | 13-minute walk |

Prices and hours were read on these pages on 7 November 2026. Rides come from [Entur](https://entur.no/) for Thursday 12 November 2026 at 12:00, and walking times from Mapbox.

After 20:00, Syverkiosken is the only one of the four still serving food: Haandtryk's kitchen and [Haralds Vaffel](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/haralds-vaffel.md) both stop at 20:00. The exception is the market, open until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays up to 19 December and on 21 and 22 December.

## What to order at Syverkiosken, with totals

[The kiosk's price list](https://www.syverkiosken.no/#priser) charges for each part: 29 NOK for the sausage, 7 NOK for a bun (brød) or lompe, 5 NOK for raw or fried onion, 7 NOK for cucumber mix, and 9 NOK each for onion salad, potato salad, jalapeños, pickled red onion, mushrooms and syverløk, its own onion topping.

Owner Erlend Dahlbo suggests four builds on the same page, which prints the parts and no totals. These are the sums:

| Erlend's suggestion | What goes on it | Total |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Norsk Urskog | Bun, fried onion, potato salad, cucumber mix | 57 NOK |
| Oslopølsa | Lompe, onion salad, syverløk, raw onion | 59 NOK |
| Spicy Rabbagast | Lompe, jalapeños, syverløk, pickled red onion | 63 NOK |
| Hellstrøm Spesial | Lompe, mushrooms, syverløk, jalapeños | 63 NOK |

To drink, it sells bottled Tøyen-Cola, Jarritos and Mexican cola, with no prices on the site. The site also says you can ask for a "treretter", a three-course sausage meal, and prints no price for that either.

## Syverkiosken is the last wooden kiosk in central Oslo, with its own sausage

The sausages are [made by Åkerberg Skoglunn Pølsemakeri](https://www.syverkiosken.no/) to a recipe from Ernst Dahlbo, Erlend's father, then simmered in a stock the kiosk says nobody outside the family knows. [The Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/travel/2017/dec/03/oslo-norway-syverkiosken-hot-dog-kiosk-street-food) called it "hotdog heaven" on 3 December 2017. Mer av Oslo's Ellen Hellebust, in [a tip from 14 October 2021](https://meravoslo.no/verdt-a-fa-med-seg-2021), called it the last wooden kiosk in Oslo and, in the writer's own view, the cosiest.

Its [history page](https://www.syverkiosken.no/historie) calls it the only wooden kiosk left in central Oslo, in place since at least 1936. Ernst Dahlbo bought it in 1979, and Erlend has run it since 2005. [Lokalhistoriewiki](https://lokalhistoriewiki.no/wiki/Syverkiosken) counts around 200 such kiosks in Oslo from the 1950s to the 1970s.

Lokalhistoriewiki measures the kiosk at about 12 square metres, and [VisitOSLO's feature](https://www.visitoslo.com/restaurants-nightlife/the-taste-of-oslo/syverkiosken) describes customers leaning on the counter and one eating at a table outside. Neither mentions indoor seating, so plan to eat outdoors. Hellebust's tip was to carry a sausage and a soda to one of the parks in Grünerløkka, the neighbourhood next to the kiosk.

Bus 54 from Jernbanetorget, the stop outside Oslo S, takes 10 minutes to Alexander Kiellands plass, then a 3-minute walk. An adult [Ruter single ticket](https://ruter.no/en/about-our-tickets/ticket-prices) costs 46 NOK in the Ruter app, which is more than the plain hot dog. It lasts 60 minutes, and the ride back takes 9, so one ticket can cover both ways if you eat quickly. The 31-minute walk from Oslo S costs nothing.

## Haandtryk is the sit-down option, on weekdays only

[Haandtryk](https://www.haandtryk.com/) says it is Oslo's oldest serving place, with a history back to 1837, and that the poet Henrik Wergeland met his future wife, Amalie Sofie Bekkevold, there in 1838. It makes its burgers and sausages with meat from Annis Pølsemakeri. It takes table bookings on its site, and every Wednesday has a quiz or music bingo. For other nights, see [Oslo's pub quizzes](/blog/quiz-oslo-best-pub-quizzes).

The menu on its site on 7 November 2026 is the [Christmas 2026 menu](https://www.haandtryk.com/s/Haandtryk-Meny-JUL-2026.pdf). It has one sausage dish, a 379 NOK plate of Christmas sausage, lamb sausage and chorizo. Burgers cost 215 to 259 NOK with fries, and an extra sausage costs 75 NOK. For 379 NOK you could buy 10 plain hot dogs at Syverkiosken (360 NOK).

The 2024 sausage menu is no longer on the site. Mer av Oslo's [feature from March 2024](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/haandtryk-polsefest-i-historisk-skjenkestue-pa-brygga) by Taran Hofvind, which was marked as an advertisement, listed sausages named after Wergeland's poems: Den Første Omfavnelse, a fried umami sausage with truffle mayonnaise (149 NOK), Mig Selv, a fried curry sausage with bacon jam and aquavit (129 NOK), Paa Havet i Storm, topped with bolognese and parmesan (120 NOK), and En Halv Alen Lange, an extra-long bratwurst (198 NOK). None of the four is on the Christmas menu, and the site shows no menu for after Christmas. The same feature gave the hours as Tuesday to Saturday. Today the Norwegian home page lists Monday to Friday and the [English page](https://www.haandtryk.com/eng) Tuesday to Friday, so book before counting on a Monday.

## Haralds Vaffel puts the sausage inside a waffle

Haralds Vaffel calls this a "Moss tradition", after a town south of Oslo: an Annis Pølsemakeri wiener in a waffle, with mustard, ketchup and crispy onion. [Wolt](https://wolt.com/en/nor/oslo/restaurant/haralds-vaffel) listed it at 119 NOK on 7 November 2026. The shop's [own site](https://www.haraldsvaffel.no/) prints no menu, so the counter price can differ.

Mer av Oslo's [story from March 2022](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/haralds-vaffel) by Ine Martine Lorentzen listed it at 79 NOK and left it untasted for next time. Maren Mjelstad's [summer list from July 2023](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/billige-sommeraktiviteter-i-oslo) calls it the Østfold variety, after the county around Moss.

It is an 11-minute walk from Syverkiosken, so one outing can cover both for 155 NOK (36 + 119 at the Wolt price). From Olaf Ryes plass, trams 12, 15 and 18 take 7 minutes back to Jernbanetorget.

## A fire grill at Jul i Vinterland, until 3 January 2027

[Lille Grill](https://www.julivinterland.no/utstillere/lille-grill), stall 24 at the Jul i Vinterland market in Spikersuppa, grills everything over a fire: Christmas sausage, "kjempegrill" (a giant grill sausage), curry sausage and bratwurst, all handmade in Western Norway. It prints no prices. Mer av Oslo's [story from November 2022](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/jul-i-vinterland) by Lene Myrum Haugen described a grill stall there with three of the same sausages, also over a fire.

From 21 December the [market hours](https://www.julivinterland.no/info/hva-er-apningstidene-pa-jul-i-vinterland) change: 21 and 22 December 11:00 to 21:00, 23 December 11:00 to 18:00, closed on 24 December, 25 to 30 December 11:00 to 20:00, 31 December 11:00 to 18:00, 1 and 2 January 12:00 to 20:00, and 3 January 12:00 to 18:00. To compare it with five other markets, see [Oslo Christmas markets](/blog/oslo-christmas-markets).

## Two older tips that no longer work

**[Rosenhoff Kiosk](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/rosenhoff-kiosk.md).** Kjersti Lien's [Mer av Oslo visit from October 2021](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/rosenhoff-kiosk-p-grnerlkka) found sausages and waffles at 30 NOK each. The kiosk's [current menu](https://rosenhoffkiosk.no/) lists 12 pizzas at 170 to 230 NOK plus tiramisu, and no hot dog.

![A chalkboard in the window of Rosenhoff Kiosk in 2021 offering waffles, sausages and soda at 30 NOK and coffee at 15 NOK.](https://osloexplore.com/blog/best-hot-dogs-in-oslo/rosenhoff-chalkboard.webp)

[Photo: Kjersti Lien / Mer av Oslo, October 2021](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/rosenhoff-kiosk-p-grnerlkka)

**Pølsehund at Vippa.** Karoline Paasche's [Mer av Oslo story from July 2021](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/verdt-sjekke-ut-paa-vippa) had a Dijon Dog at 132 NOK from this stall. [Vippa's stall list](https://www.vippa.no/mat-drikke) now names eight stalls, and Pølsehund is not one of them. Our [food hall comparison](/blog/oslo-street-food) covers Vippa, Mathallen and Oslo Street Food.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where is the best hot dog in Oslo?

Syverkiosken has the strongest record, though Oslo Explore has run no taste test of its own. [Its site reports](https://www.syverkiosken.no/blogg) that [NRK's FlippKlipp](https://tv.nrk.no/serie/flippklipp/sesong/2024/episode/MSUM01005124) gave it the only 10 out of 10 when testing Oslo's hot dogs in 2024, and that [Dagbladet named it test winner](https://www.syverkiosken.no/) in January 2017.

### Can I get a hot dog in Oslo after 23:30?

All four places on this page are closed by then. The fallback is a convenience store: [7-Eleven's store list](https://7-eleven.no/butikker) shows its Flytogterminalen shop at Jernbanetorget 1, by Oslo S, open 04:00 to 01:30 every day, and [Narvesen](https://narvesen.no/produkter/p%C3%B8lser) lists sausages under hot food, with no prices. A [budget guide from January 2017](https://cheapskates.guide/oslo/eat/polse-norwegian-hot-dog/) named Narvesen and 7-Eleven around Oslo S for hot dogs at 25 to 45 NOK, and that price is nearly 10 years old.

### Is there a vegetarian hot dog in Oslo?

None of the four lists one. [Haandtryk's Christmas menu](https://www.haandtryk.com/s/Haandtryk-Meny-JUL-2026.pdf) offers its cheese burger and Christmas burger as vegetarian, and Haralds Vaffel lists a vegan coconut waffle at 99 NOK on [Wolt](https://wolt.com/en/nor/oslo/restaurant/haralds-vaffel).

### Can I buy the sausages to cook myself?

Yes. [Syverkiosken](https://www.syverkiosken.no/) sells its sausages by the kilo and prints no price. [Annis Pølsemakeri](https://mathallenoslo.no/en/butikk/annis-polsemakeri/), the butcher in Mathallen, supplies the meat for Haandtryk's sausages and the wiener at Haralds Vaffel. It is a 9-minute walk from Syverkiosken and opens Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 20:00 and Sunday 11:00 to 18:00.

### What do the words on a Norwegian hot dog menu mean?

Pølse is the sausage. On Syverkiosken's price list, løksalat is onion salad, agurkmix is cucumber mix, potetsalat is potato salad, syltet rødløk is pickled red onion and sopp is mushrooms. Løk alone is onion, so stekt løk is fried onion and rå løk is raw onion. Sennep is mustard.
