# Things to Do in Oslo in Winter: Sledding, Skating and Warm Cabins

The best things to do in Oslo in winter are sledding the Korketrekkeren run, skating on the city-centre ice at Spikersuppa, skiing an easy trail from a metro stop, and warming up by a fire pan or in a forest cabin. Snow and ice decide most of these, so choose on the day and keep an indoor backup such as a hot chocolate in town.

## Choose a winter activity at a glance

| Activity | Best for | Depends on | Cost checked on 5 November 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Korketrekkeren sledding, Frognerseteren | Speed with friends or family, and no walking back up | Enough snow | Free with your own sled; rental NOK 80 to 150 |
| Skating at Spikersuppa, city centre | A short visit with no gear of your own | Ice that can close at short notice | Free; skate rental NOK 200 |
| Skiing from Grorud to Skytta, Lillomarka | A first try on cross-country skis | Snow, listed for December to March | Free trail; bring or rent skis |
| Fire pan at Grefsenkollen | A hot outdoor meal with a view, no skills needed | Booking; minimum 2 people midweek, 4 at weekends | NOK 425 per person |
| Forest cabin such as Skullerudstua | A walk or ski with a warm stop | Cabin hours | Pay for what you order |
| Winter dip at Sørenga | A very short cold-water swim with company, near the centre | Weather and water; lifeguards work only in summer | Free |
| Smykbar jewellery workshop, city centre | A bad-weather hour indoors with friends | Opening hours | From NOK 299 |
| Hot chocolate at [Cocoa](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/cocoa.md), [Anne på Landet](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/anne-pa-landet.md) or Hotel Bristol | A slow, warm break | Opening hours | NOK 65 to 95 in 2024 |

Daylight is the limit people forget. On 21 December 2026 the sun rises at 09:18 and sets at 15:12 ([timeanddate](https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/norway/oslo?month=12&year=2026)), so put anything outdoors in the middle of the day. The season was only starting when we checked on 5 November 2026: both sled rental shops were closed, the Spikersuppa rink was due to open on 28 November, and Grefsenkollen's fire pans were taking bookings.

This guide adapts [Mer av Oslo's "Tips til vinteraktiviteter i Oslo"](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/tips-til-vinteraktiviteter-i-oslo) (Tips for winter activities in Oslo), published on 26 November 2024 by Frida Wattne Lindland and the editorial team. Prices and visit notes from Mer av Oslo keep their year. Details described as current were checked on the linked pages on 5 November 2026, and we replaced or flagged what had changed.

## Get out in the snow: sledding and skiing

Oslo may not have jagged peaks, as Mer av Oslo puts it, but there is plenty of room to play in the snow.

### Sled down Korketrekkeren

Korketrekkeren ("the Corkscrew") is the one to try first if there is snow. You sled from Frognerseteren down to Midtstuen, then take the T-bane (metro) line 1 back up and go again, so you never walk the hill. [Oslo Municipality](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/idrett/idrettsanlegg/korketrekkeren/) gives about 2,700 metres, a 255-metre drop and 8 to 10 minutes without stops, while [VisitOSLO](https://www.visitoslo.com/activity/toboggan-run-korketrekkeren) and Mer av Oslo say about two kilometres. The municipality says sledding is free with your own sled, recommends a helmet, and opens the run only when there is enough snow.

You can rent a proper sled near the top, a little below the Frognerseteren terminus:

- [Akeforeningen](https://akeforeningen.no/kjelkeutleie/) lists NOK 130 a day for adults and NOK 80 for under-18s, with a helmet included when one is available. Its page showed "closed" on 5 November 2026.
- [Skimore Kjelkeutleie](https://www.skimore.no/kjelkeutleie/priser) lists NOK 115 for anyone under 160 cm and NOK 150 for anyone taller, plus NOK 175 for a jacket and trousers. Its [opening hours page](https://www.skimore.no/kjelkeutleie/apningstider) also showed closed on 5 November 2026.

Akeforeningen says the metro takes 35 minutes from Nationaltheatret to Frognerseteren and 16 minutes back up after a run. It also says the hill is normally groomed at night when there is enough snow and frost, so conditions are best in the morning. Weekdays are usually quiet, as are Saturdays until 11:00 and Sundays until 12:00.

This is not a bobsled track. You set your own speed by braking, and Mer av Oslo's light-hearted warning is to mind your backside over the bumps. All sledding is at your own risk, so wear warm, dry clothes and shoes that cover the ankle, skip plastic bags and anything you cannot steer, never stop in the track or walk on it, and move to the side at once if you fall.

### Ski a trail from the city

If sledding is not for you, Mer av Oslo's next idea is to clip on skis and head into the marka, the forests that ring Oslo. These are its three picks:

- **Grorud to Skytta, Lillomarka (first-timers).** Take metro line 5 to Grorud, then walk for 10 minutes. [UT.no](https://ut.no/turforslag/1110919/nybegynnertur-i-lillomarka) lists 7.1 km there and back, about an hour, a 118-metre climb, lights the whole way and a December to March season.
- **Nøklevann, Østmarka (check your route).** Mer av Oslo started from Bøler metro station in 2024 and described a flat, easy loop of about 6 km, ideal for beginners. The route page it linked has since gone and we could not confirm the exact line, which may have crossed the lake. [UT.no's Rustadsaga page](https://ut.no/hytte/10988/rustadsaga) says a ski trail runs from Skullerudstua, [500 metres from Skullerud metro](https://www.skullerudstua.no/), around Nøklevann when there is enough snow, and gives 8.3 km for a lap of the lake road. UT.no's [walking route on that road](https://ut.no/turforslag/1110939) calls it quite hilly and moderately demanding, so do not expect a flat lap, and stay off the ice.
- **Kikutstua, Nordmarka (a full day).** [UT.no](https://ut.no/hytte/10647/kikutstua) gives 10 km from Sørkedalen to the cabin, so about 20 km there and back, with the shortest way starting at Sørkedalen skole. Mer av Oslo called it a little on the long side, with quite a few uphills and views of forest and finally Bjørnsjøen, but well worth it. [Its 2023 ski story](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/pa-skitur-til-kikutstua-i-nordmarka) adds that it may suit slightly more experienced skiers, and reports NOK 96 for a waffle with cocoa and cream. The café opens Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 16:00, and the self-service room is open around the clock all year.

No skis? [Skimore Oslo](https://www.skimore.no/oslo/skiutleie) at Tryvann rents gear, and its [price list](https://www.skimore.no/oslo/priser) includes touring skis. Check grooming on [sporet.no](https://sporet.no/) before you set off. To see Oslo's ski history without skis, read our [Holmenkollen guide](/blog/visit-holmenkollen-ski-jump-museum-oslo).

### Skate in the city centre

[Spikersuppa](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/idrett/idrettsanlegg/spikersuppa/) is the simplest choice for a visitor: free, in the middle of the city, and with skates to rent for NOK 200 in the pavilion beside the ice. The ice is prepared every day from 07:30 to 10:00, with no skating while that happens, and pucks and sticks are not allowed. Rental opens daily from 11:00 to 21:00 in December, except Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, then weekdays from 15:00 to 21:00 and weekends from 11:00 to 21:00 from 1 January to 15 March.

Until early January the rink is part of the free [Jul i Vinterland](https://www.julivinterland.no/) Christmas market, which runs from 7 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The [rink page](https://www.julivinterland.no/opplevelser/skoytebanen) says the ice opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 17:00 and can close without notice because of weather or ice conditions. It places skate rental behind the Ferris wheel. [Market hours](https://www.julivinterland.no/nyheter/apningstider-2026) are Monday to Thursday 12:00 to 20:00, Friday 12:00 to 21:00, Saturday 10:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 10:00 to 20:00.

Two more options suit people with their own skates:

- [Frogner stadion](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/idrett/idrettsanlegg/frogner-stadion/) has ice from November to mid-March, with public time alongside speed skating and bandy. Organised sport takes afternoons, evenings and weekends, so read the public times first. A helmet is recommended.
- Middelalderparken has a small water that freezes and gets shovelled, according to Mer av Oslo in [2022](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/skoyteturer-i-oslo) and 2024. We found no current schedule, so treat it as a local tip.

### Skate on a frozen lake

For longer tours in cold weather, Mer av Oslo names Maridalsvannet, Bogstadvannet and Sognsvann. At [Sognsvann](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/tur-og-friluftsliv/badeplasser/sognsvann/), the municipality prepares a rink and a walking route on the lake when the ice is thick enough, and the 3.3 km path around it is ploughed and gritted in winter.

Natural ice is a different thing from a city rink, and falling in can be life-threatening. Mer av Oslo's [2022 skating story](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/skoyteturer-i-oslo) lists ice picks, a throw line, ice poles, spare clothes in a waterproof bag, a crotch strap and a helmet, and warns that other people on the ice prove nothing. Read the [regional ice warnings](https://www.varsom.no/is/isvarsling/regionale-isvarsler/ostlandet/) and [Varsom's ice school](https://www.varsom.no/is/isskolen/) first. If you are new to this or have no gear, stay on the prepared rinks.

### Take a winter dip

Mer av Oslo's case for ice bathing is simple: you very rarely regret a swim. At Sørenga or elsewhere along the fjord you do not need a hole in the ice. [Oslo Municipality](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/tur-og-friluftsliv/badeplasser/sorenga-sjobad/) confirms you can dip from the quay in winter, with toilets open from 07:00 to 16:00 from 15 October to 31 March. It advises against swimming for a day after heavy rain, and rates the latest water sample good but the four-year average poor. Lifeguards work only in the summer holidays, so bring warm clothes, a warm drink and at least one bathing companion, as Mer av Oslo advises. Work out how you will climb out before you get in, enter gradually and keep it short.

The tougher version is a small hole in the ice at Sognsvann. In [Mer av Oslo's 2022 story](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/isbading-i-oslo), local bathers kept one open. That is an informal arrangement, not an official facility, and holes refreeze quickly in cold weather, so the story suggests checking Facebook ice-bathing groups to see where one has been cut.

The same story gives beginners these tips: wool socks, mittens and a hat help, breathe as calmly as you can on the way in, then dress and move around to warm up. Anyone with heart problems or another illness that makes a shock hard on the body should wait for warmer water, or build up gradually and talk to a doctor first. If you want heat as well, our [floating sauna guide](/blog/floating-sauna-oslo) covers the sauna boats on the harbour.

## Eat around a fire pan

Book a bålpanne (fire pan) when you mostly want hot food and fresh air. Mer av Oslo recommends two places, but only one is an option right now: [SALT](https://www.salted.no/), its city-centre pick at Langkaia, says on its website that it is temporarily closed, [sauna](https://www.salted.no/sauna) included. Check for a reopening before you plan around it.

[Photo: Liv Einemo Tønjum / Mer av Oslo](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/baalpanne-i-oslo-grefsenkollen-og-salt)

[Grefsenkollen](https://www.grefsenkollen.no/balpanne) is the one to book, and it comes with a view over the city. Its page says the fire pans open for the season from 31 October. You get game stew, homemade apple gløgg (a mulled drink), stick bread and marshmallows for NOK 425 per person, half price for children under 12, and you have the fire pan for two hours. Book Wednesday to Friday from 12:00 to 19:30 with at least 2 people, Saturday at 12:00, 14:30, 17:00 or 19:30 with at least 4, or Sunday at 12:00, 14:30 or 17:00 with at least 4. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday. In bad weather the fire pans move under a roof with heat lamps. The address is Grefsenkollveien 100.

If you would rather cook, Mer av Oslo suggests a camp stove at Hauktjern, a small lake in Østmarka about 2.2 km from Ulsrudvann. Take the metro to Ulsrud and follow the signs. [Oslo Municipality](https://www.oslo.kommune.no/natur-kultur-og-fritid/tur-og-friluftsliv/badeplasser/hauktjern/) confirms that this is the shortest way in and that the lake can only be reached on a blue-marked trail, so wear footwear that grips.

## Hike to the Bjørnsjøhelvete bridge, if you are experienced

Mer av Oslo rates the suspension bridge at Bjørnsjøhelvete in Nordmarka in winter too, with ice grips (brodder), for its view from the span. Its 2024 directions were a bus to Hammeren in Maridalen, signs toward Bjørnholt, then blue-marked trees for about an hour and a half.

The sources disagree on how hard this is. [Mer av Oslo's 2022 story](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/hengebrua-over-bjrnsjhelvete) says you do not need to be especially experienced, but it took nearly two hours to reach the bridge, calls the route poorly signed and slippery, and says stepping onto the planks is at your own risk. [UT.no](https://ut.no/turforslag/1112157440/rundtur-over-bjrnsjhelvete-i-nordmarka) lists the round trip as 15.1 km, about 5 hours and demanding, with a May to October season. In snow and short daylight we would take the stricter view: go only with winter hiking experience, and start early enough to finish before dark.

## Warm up in a forest cabin

A sportsstue is a staffed forest cabin that serves food, so you can have a proper day out without carrying lunch. Mer av Oslo's list has changed since 2024: [Skjennungstua](http://www.skjennungstua.no/) says it has been closed until further notice since 13 June 2026, so we have swapped in Tryvannstua.

| [Tryvannstua](https://tryvannstua-sportsstue.no/), Nordmarka | About 10 minutes on skis from Frognerseteren station, the cabin says | Tue to Sun 10:00 to 16:00 | Its own bakery and a big fireplace, according to [Mer av Oslo in September 2026](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/tryvannstua-turmaalet-for-deg-som-elsker-bakst) |

Hours can shift around holidays, so check on the day. Kikutstua, covered above, is the long-distance option.

## When the weather turns: pottery, jewellery and classes

Tired of grey slush, fog and darkness? That is how Mer av Oslo introduces its indoor ideas, and they work when the snow does not.

![A smiling woman with a paintbrush in her hand holds up a cup painted with a blue checked flowerpot and a small coffee cup at Paint on Pots in March 2024.](https://osloexplore.com/blog/things-to-do-in-oslo-in-winter/paint-on-pots-cup.webp)

[Photo: Taran Hofvind / Mer av Oslo](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/tips-til-vinteraktiviteter-i-oslo)

- **[Paint on Pots](https://www.paintonpots.no/slik-fungerer-det) suits residents and longer stays.** At this ceramics café you book a two-hour session and paint cups, plates or vases. Mer av Oslo's [2024 feature](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/paint-on-pots-keramikk-kafe) on the Sagene café was marked as an advertisement. Your piece is glazed and fired, then ready after one to two weeks, so it does not suit a short visit unless someone can collect it.
- **[Smykbar](https://www.smykbar.no/) suits a visitor better.** At Prinsens gate 12 you design necklaces, earrings or bracelets from NOK 299, and it offers free gløgg on Advent Sundays.
- **Food and drink classes.** Mer av Oslo, the source of this guide, sells its own classes. On 5 November 2026 most were full for the rest of the year, and the next dates were in January 2027: [cocktails](https://meravoslo.no/mer-av-opplevelser/opplevelser/cocktailkurs) at NOK 590 (16 January, in English), [Himalayan dumplings](https://meravoslo.no/mer-av-opplevelser/opplevelser/himalayan-dumplings-med-bijay) at NOK 670 (27 January, in English), [coffee cupping with Fuglen](https://meravoslo.no/mer-av-opplevelser/opplevelser/cupping-kaffesmaking-med-fuglen) at NOK 350 (7 and 28 January, in Norwegian and English) and [Italian pasta](https://meravoslo.no/mer-av-opplevelser/opplevelser/italiensk-pastakurs-med-italianinoslo) at NOK 1,290 (12 January, in Norwegian and English).

For a dark afternoon with no booking at all, use our [Oslo museums guide](/blog/oslo-museums-guide).

## Where to get hot chocolate

Nothing beats a steaming cup in the cold, Mer av Oslo says, and it picked three places. The prices below are from its 2024 article, so expect them to have moved.

![A hand holds an enamel Anne på Landet mug of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream on a wooden table in Frognerparken in October 2024.](https://osloexplore.com/blog/things-to-do-in-oslo-in-winter/anne-pa-landet.webp)

[Photo: Kathrine Skjærum / Mer av Oslo](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/tips-til-vinteraktiviteter-i-oslo)

![A pink mug of hot chocolate heaped with mini marshmallows on a paint-chipped table by the window at Cocoa in October 2024.](https://osloexplore.com/blog/things-to-do-in-oslo-in-winter/cocoa.webp)

[Photo: Kathrine Skjærum / Mer av Oslo](https://meravoslo.no/nyheter/tips-til-vinteraktiviteter-i-oslo)

- **[Cocoa](https://www.visitoslo.com/eat/cocoa), for choice.** By Birkelunden at Grünerløkka, at Toftes gate 48, VisitOSLO calls it Norway's first cocoa bar. In 2024 it had ten flavours such as mint and chilli or raspberry, plenty of toppings and a NOK 65 cup. Its own website did not load when we checked and we could not confirm current hours, so check before going.
- **[Anne på Landet](https://www.annepaalandet.no/), for a park walk.** Mer av Oslo found rich cocoa with cream for NOK 73 at the Frognerparken café. The café says it is open every day of the year except Christmas Eve, from 10:00 in Frognerparken and from 11:00 at [Hønse-Lovisas hus](https://osloexplore.com/oslo/places/honse-lovisas-hus.md) at Sagene.
- **[Hotel Bristol](https://hotelbristol.no/artikler/oslos-beste-kakao/), for an occasion.** The hotel serves it in a small silver pot with cream and grated chocolate on the side, in Vinterhaven and Bibliotekbaren. Mer av Oslo reported NOK 95 and compared it to an afternoon tea. In 2024 you had to order food until 18:00, with scones at NOK 135.

## Pick by your situation

- **One day, no gear, little snow:** skate at Spikersuppa once the rental opens, then have a hot chocolate in the centre.
- **Good snow and a free morning:** Korketrekkeren, early, while the run is freshly groomed and quiet.
- **Never skied:** Grorud to Skytta, because it is short, lit and close to the metro.
- **A group that wants food, not exercise:** a fire pan at Grefsenkollen.
- **Three days to fill:** our [3-day Oslo winter itinerary](/blog/perfect-3-day-oslo-winter-itinerary-2025-locals-guide-map) puts the sights in order.
- **Still choosing dates:** see our guide to the [best time to visit Oslo](/blog/best-time-to-visit-oslo).

## Before you go

- Confirm the sled rental is open on [Akeforeningen](https://akeforeningen.no/kjelkeutleie/) or [Skimore](https://www.skimore.no/kjelkeutleie/apningstider), since the run depends on snow.
- Check trails on [sporet.no](https://sporet.no/) and lake ice on [Varsom](https://www.varsom.no/is/isvarsling/regionale-isvarsler/ostlandet/).
- Book fire pans, Paint on Pots and classes ahead.
- Plan routes with [Ruter's journey planner](https://ruter.no/en/plan-journey).
- Pack warm, dry layers and a spare pair of gloves or socks for anything outdoors.
- Finish forest trips before dark, and carry a headlamp on longer ones.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are the best things to do in Oslo in winter?

The best winter activities in Oslo are sledding the Korketrekkeren run, skating at Spikersuppa, skiing an easy trail such as Grorud to Skytta, and eating around a fire pan at Grefsenkollen. Snow and ice decide most of them, so check conditions on the day. A hot chocolate, a jewellery workshop or a museum still works if they let you down.

### Can you go sledding in Oslo without your own sled?

Yes, you can rent a sled near the top of Korketrekkeren from Akeforeningen or Skimore Kjelkeutleie. On 5 November 2026 their pages listed prices from NOK 80 to NOK 150, depending on age or height, but both were closed until the season starts. Sledding itself is free, and the run only opens when there is enough snow.

### Where can you ice skate in central Oslo?

Spikersuppa is the free rink in the middle of Oslo. The Jul i Vinterland rink page says the ice opens on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 17:00. You can bring skates or rent a pair for NOK 200, pucks and sticks are not allowed, and the ice can close without notice because of weather or ice conditions.

### What can you do in Oslo in winter if there is no snow?

Book a fire pan, skate on prepared ice or head indoors. Grefsenkollen moves its fire pans under a roof with heat lamps in bad weather, the rinks at Spikersuppa and Frogner stadion need ice rather than snow, and Smykbar, cafés and museums do not depend on the weather at all.

### How much daylight does Oslo get in winter?

Expect about six hours around the shortest days. In 2026 timeanddate lists sunrise at 08:51 and sunset at 15:20 on 1 December, and sunrise at 09:18 and sunset at 15:12 on 21 December, which is 5 hours and 54 minutes. Plan outdoor activities for the middle of the day and keep the dark afternoons for cafés, saunas and museums.
