Planning a trip to Oslo in 2025? You'll need to know about significant transport disruptions affecting the city's metro system. Here's your complete guide to getting around and where to stay during this challenging but manageable period.

Metro Disruptions in 2025

The metro situation is fairly messy this year. Majorstuen station closes to boarding 23 Jun–4 Jul and 11 Aug–19 Sep, with bus 2B replacing metro lines 2–3 until 3 Nov. Nationaltheatret also shuts down during that summer period.

Metro (T-bane) lines 2 and 3 stay closed between Majorstuen and Borgen from late March until November, with bus replacements running.

Don't worry though – you can still get around fine. The transport network is quite comprehensive with alternatives in place.

Transport That Actually Works

Bus Replacements

Buses cover all the closed metro routes, ensuring you can still reach your destinations.

Airport Connections

  • Flytoget: Fastest from airport (19 min, 252 NOK)
  • Vy trains: Cheaper airport option (23 min, around 120-129 NOK)

Alternative Transport

  • City bikes: Work well for central areas
  • Ferries to islands: Use same tickets as other public transport
  • Trams 11 and 13: Work as alternatives to closed metro segments

Pro tip: Download the Ruter app before you arrive. Real-time updates are essential this year.

Ticket Prices (2025)

  • Single zone ticket: 44 NOK (valid 60 min)
  • 24-hour pass: 132 NOK

Where to Stay

Sentrum (City Center)

Best for: First-time visitors

  • Walk to most attractions
  • Multiple bus lines replace metro
  • Expensive but convenient

Grünerløkka

Best for: Trendy atmosphere

  • Hip area with cafes and bars
  • Direct tram corridor bypasses closures
  • Can be noisy at night

Frogner

Best for: Park lovers

  • Near Vigeland Park
  • Good bus and tram connections
  • Bit longer to airport

Aker Brygge

Best for: Waterfront experience

  • Premium waterfront location
  • Ferry connections to islands
  • Premium pricing

Grønland

Best for: Budget travelers

  • Most affordable option
  • 5-minute walk to Oslo Central Station for airport trains
  • Good transport connections

Important: Book early. Peak summer demand plus rerouted commuters often pushes hotel occupancy into the high-80% range.

Pro Tips for 2025

  1. Allow extra time: Add 10-15 minutes for connections during summer shutdown
  2. Board early: Replacement buses fill up fast
  3. Consider bikes: Great for trips under 5km
  4. Use alternative trams: Trams 11 and 13 work as alternatives to closed metro segments
  5. Stay flexible: Keep the Ruter app handy for real-time updates

The upgrades should make everything better by November. For now, it's buses and patience, but Oslo remains as accessible and enjoyable as ever with a bit of planning.
