On New Year's Eve in Oslo, Thursday 31 December 2026, Oslo kommune, the city government, lets private people fire approved fireworks without an application only outside Ring 2, the ring road around the city centre, from 18:00 to 02:00, and it has announced no city display. So pick your midnight spot by the ride home: the last metro from the centre leaves at 02:22, one hour later than on Thursday 7 January 2027. Rules, timetables, prices and opening hours on this page were read on 7 November 2026.

Oslo kommune has announced no city display for 2026

On 7 November 2026 Oslo kommune's news site has fireworks and New Year articles for 2024 and 2025 and none for 2026. Its fireworks page covers private use, permits and sales and names no display, place or time. The article of 27 December 2025 says the city arranged no fireworks or light show that year because the budget did not prioritise it, and that the city government is positive about business or others holding a fireworks event. So a 2026 show could come from someone other than the city.

The last city event it announced was a laser light show from Rådhusplassen for New Year's Eve 2024, at NOK 1,985,000 in total, and it asked people to watch from a distance and not gather on the square. Its last public fireworks were in 2019/2020. Two New Year's Eve cruise listings on ilovenorway.se advertise views of the midnight fireworks and name no organiser, so treat any display as unconfirmed. Plan midnight without one.

Where private fireworks are legal on 31 December

The rules from Oslo kommune and DSB, the national safety agency:

  • When: 18:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January. Any other use needs an application.
  • Where: outside Ring 2, outside the wooden-house areas at Kampen and Vålerenga, and away from dry forest and other flammable surroundings.
  • Who: adults. Letting anyone under 18 fire them is forbidden.
  • What: approved fireworks. Rockets with guide sticks are banned everywhere, and flying lanterns are not allowed.
  • Goggles: for whoever fires, and the city says children and spectators should wear them too. DSB counts an average of 10 people a year over the last five years with eye injuries from New Year's Eve fireworks.
  • Misfires: leave them for 30 minutes or soak them in water. They do not go in the bin.

Oslo kommune describes the ban area as inside Ring 2 in the city centre, plus the wooden-house areas at Kampen and Vålerenga, and lists no streets or parks. Its page links a detailed map of the zones for the exact line. News in English described the area in December 2022 as running from Ring 2 to the fjord, and reported that many people fire there anyway, often in parks. The ban still applies to you.

With a hotel inside Ring 2, firing anything means travelling out. Oslo kommune's fireworks page names no place set aside for private fireworks. Ekebergparken describes itself as a public forest area, and the rule bars launches near dry forest, so go there without rockets.

The rule could still change. On 1 June 2026 parliament voted 67 to 34 to ask the government to let municipalities regulate or ban private fireworks across the whole municipality, and a proposal for a national ban failed 89 to 11. That vote is a request to the government and changes no rule by itself. The minister's letter in the committee report plans a review by the end of 2026. Oslo kommune's page still showed the Ring 2 rule on 7 November 2026, so plan on that for this New Year's Eve.

Jernbanetorget is the metro, tram and bus stop outside Oslo S, the central station. Times are vehicle departures from the published timetable in Entur, the national journey planner. Walks are Mapbox walking directions from each place to Oslo S, and direction matters: Oslo S to the Opera is 6 minutes, and the climb from Oslo S to Holmenkollen is 128 minutes. Heights are Kartverket data, except St. Hanshaugen, which is Oslo kommune's figure, and the same page names bus 37 as the way there. Oslo kommune's pages for St. Hanshaugen and Frogner Park, and Ekebergparken's visit page, do not say what can be seen at midnight, so height is no promise of a view.

The Holmenkollen row uses Kongeveien 5, the address in the ticket shop, 9 minutes uphill from the metro platform. Holmenkollen's directions print a 10-minute walk and give Kongeveien 40 for GPS. Kongeveien 40 is 14 minutes from the platform, 99 minutes from Oslo S and 357 m high, and the 23:22 metro gets you there at 00:02.

For the shortest way home, choose the Opera forecourt. For height with a walk back under 30 minutes, St. Hanshaugen (83 m, about 27 minutes) and Ekeberg (86 m, 24 minutes) both qualify. Ekeberg is 3 m higher and 3 minutes closer on foot, and St. Hanshaugen has the longer service: bus 37 reaches Jernbanetorget in 12 minutes through the night, while neither Kongshavn nor the Ekebergparken stop has a direct ride between 03:54 and 05:59. Frogner Park also keeps a direct ride through the night, with 12N until 06:08 and tram 12 from 06:27, but the walk back is about 48 minutes. Holmenkollen adds 231 m, but the walk back is 97 minutes, and after the 01:37 metro the ride is night bus 1N from Besserud T until 03:32. The Holmenkollen tower closes at 14:00 on 31 December, so the height at midnight is ground level.

After Ekeberg's last tram at 01:50, night buses 81N and 83N leave Kongshavn for Jernbanetorget every 15 minutes from 01:54 to 03:54, and Kongshavn is 686 m and 6 minutes on foot from Kongsveien 15, by Kongsveien and Karlsborgveien. Frogner Park's last direct tram leaves Vigelandsparken at 02:11, and night bus 12N follows at 02:38, then every 30 minutes until 06:08.

Road works make the Ekeberg walks less certain. Ekeberg Restaurant's home page, updated 8 August 2026, says Kongsveien is closed from the bottom of the hill up to Kongshavn school, that cars can still come up Karlsborgveien, and that trams 13 and 19 stop at Ekebergparken. Ekebergparken's visit page, updated 2 November 2026, says the road is open to pedestrians, bicycles and one-way driving, and names the Love Path beside it, about 10 minutes from Konows gate to the viewpoint. Neither notice gives an end date, so the walks on 31 December are unconfirmed and tram 19 is the plan. The walk to Kongshavn runs 327 m on Kongsveien and then down Karlsborgveien, and the 24-minute walk to Oslo S turns off Kongsveien onto Trollstien after 32 m, so check both on site before you rely on them.

Ekebergparken and Frogner Park are open all night and free. Ekebergparken says it maintains its main roads in winter and cannot gravel forest areas, so stay on the main roads after dark. Its public toilets are open 24 hours and cost NOK 20.

On the harbour front, Sørenga sjøbad is 15 minutes on foot from Oslo S, Rådhusplassen 16 and the Aker Brygge pier 24. The Opera publishes hours for its foyer and not for the roof, so the table uses the forecourt.

Metro, tram and night bus times on the night

Ruter, Oslo's public transport company, still shows Christmas schedules 2025, last updated 16 September 2026. That page promises extended metro and tram hours on the night before New Year's Day. Entur's timetable already carries them for 2026: every metro (T-bane) and tram line below runs its last departure from Jernbanetorget exactly one hour later than on Thursday 7 January 2027.

Ruter's night bus page says Friday and Saturday nights, and 31 December 2026 is a Thursday. The timetable adds them anyway: 12 night lines leave Jernbanetorget (1N, 2N, 3N, 4N, 5N, 11N, 12N, 19N, 42N, 70N, 81N and 83N), where Thursday 7 January 2027 has only 11N and 12N. They start between 01:15 and 01:40, before the last metro, and most run until about 03:30 to 04:05. Lines 11N and 12N run until 06:10 and 06:24. A regular Ruter ticket is valid. The same 12 lines run on the night of 1 to 2 January.

Ruter's 2025 page also gives weekday service until 04:00 on 31 December, a Saturday timetable after that, and a Sunday timetable on 1 January. Entur's timetable has no island ferry B1 on 1 January 2027. Run your trip through Ruter's journey planner on 30 December, because these departures can still change.

On Thursday 7 January 2027 Flytoget leaves Oslo S until 00:00, so 31 December loses 3 hours 40 minutes of service. After the 23:44 from Oslo S, which arrives at 00:48, the next public transport arrival from the city is 03:44. Once the 21:10 train has left the airport, the fastest ride in this table takes 43 minutes, 21 more than the train, and missing the metro at Helsfyr costs 2 to 9 minutes more.

On 1 January the first Flytoget leaves Oslo S at 04:40. From the airport it starts at 05:30 and runs every 20 minutes, and the first Vy train leaves at 06:43. Fares and the cheapest route are in our airport transfer guide.

The National Museum and Astrup Fearnley are closed on both days, and the MUNCH and Nobel Peace Center lists stop at 2026. So among these museums, the hours that cover 1 January 2027 are those of Fram and Kon-Tiki on Bygdøy and the ski museum at Holmenkollen. Other museums are in the Oslo museums guide, and snow and skating options are in the winter guide.

Beer sales in shops end at 18:00 on 31 December

Oslo kommune's sale hours let shops sell beer from 08:00 to 18:00 on 31 December, with no beer sale on 1 January. So shop beer for midnight has to be bought by 18:00. Byporten's centre hours at Jernbanetorget end at 16:00 on 31 December and list 1 January as closed, and some of its shops keep their own hours.

Sunset at 15:21, and no forecast until about 21 December

MET Norway gives sunrise at 09:18 and sunset at 15:21 on 31 December, then 09:18 and 15:22 on 1 January. That is 6 hours 3 minutes of daylight on 31 December, and an outdoor stop at Holmenkollen on 1 January runs out of light 38 minutes before the museum closes.

MET's forecast runs about 10 days ahead, so 31 December should first appear around 21 December. Until then, plan for neither snow nor a clear sky. December 2025 averaged 2.4 °C at Oslo Blindern, equal to that station's warmest December on record, and several stations in Agder, Telemark, Oslo and Finnmark got 130 to 180% more precipitation than normal (Meteorologisk institutt). News in English reported on 2 January 2017 that the city's NOK 800,000 display on New Year's Eve 2016 disappeared in fog.

Three plans with times

Indoors until 17:30 on 31 December

  1. 10:00: MUNCH opens and closes at 14:00. Katharina Grosse runs until 3 January 2027.
  2. Walk 7 minutes from MUNCH to the Opera House.
  3. 15:00: La bohème, 2 hours 30 minutes with one interval, so out at about 17:30. Tickets cost 195 to 995 NOK, and the programme marked this performance as few tickets on 7 November 2026. It is sung in Italian with Norwegian and English surtitles. Sunset falls during the performance.

Midnight at Ekeberg, by tram both ways

  1. 23:38: tram 19 from Jernbanetorget reaches the Ekebergparken stop at 23:47.
  2. Walk 5 minutes to the road outside Ekeberg Restaurant, Kongsveien 15.
  3. 01:50: tram 19 back reaches Jernbanetorget, the stop outside Oslo S, at 01:59. The tram stop is 3 minutes on foot from Kongsveien 15. The 24-minute walk to Oslo S depends on the road works described above.

Bygdøy or Holmenkollen by daylight on 1 January

  1. 11:04: bus 30 from Jernbanetorget reaches Bygdøynes at 11:28, beside Fram and Kon-Tiki. Each costs 180 NOK for an adult. Norsk Folkemuseum, also on Bygdøy, is closed.
  2. Back in the centre, Jul i Vinterland runs until 20:00 and skate hire at Spikersuppa starts at 15:00 for NOK 200. Spikersuppa is 14 minutes on foot from Oslo S.
  3. Instead of Bygdøy: metro 1 from Jernbanetorget at 11:07 reaches Holmenkollen at 11:33, and the ski jump museum is 9 to 14 minutes on foot, depending on which address you follow. The adult price of 200 NOK comes from the list labelled Prices 2026.

Other dated events around New Year are in the Oslo events calendar.

Fireworks questions

Can I bring fireworks to Oslo from another country?

No. Oslo kommune says private people cannot import fireworks, and DSB calls bringing them from abroad illegal.

Where can I buy fireworks in Oslo?

From sellers licensed by the fire service, over the counter, from 27 to 31 December. Sales inside shopping centres and in buildings where people live are not allowed. DSB gives the buying age as 18, or 12 for small sparklers.

Can I use sparklers inside Ring 2?

Oslo kommune calls the zone a total ban on setting off fireworks and prints no exception for sparklers, so count them as banned there.

What do I do with fireworks I do not use?

Return them to the seller or importer, who must take them back. The fire service does not accept them. In Oslo, Engelsrud NFI Fyrverkeri at Lørenveien 68 has a shop that takes unused fireworks.
