Babbo Øvrefoss

Babbo Øvrefoss

A place that’s been praised, controversial and lively, but thankfully the food is a real highlight. It’s a perfect mix of bakery and trattoria, where the day begins with the scent of fresh sourdough bread and cardamom buns, while the evening fills with wood-fired pizzas, hand-rolled pasta and Mediterranean small plates. The atmosphere is warm and slightly bohemian, with dark walls, vinyl records, plants and historic stucco. A great brunch option, and you should try both the sourdough pancake for breakfast and the pastrami sandwich for lunch. You can also find Babbo in Parkveien and Frogner.

This spot in Oslobukta fits just about any occasion, whether it’s weekend brunch, a tasty lunch or late evenings with wine and pasta. The sun does a lot of the work here, as the outdoor seating gets fantastic sunlight starting from 11 in the morning. Their Saturday brunch is served from 11 to 15, with five different Saturday brunch specials. When it comes to drinks, the selection is a bit limited, so if you’re the type who needs a cappuccino or fresh juice with brunch, that’s something to keep in mind.

Gartneriet Spiseri

Gartneriet Spiseri

A unique weekend brunch with cows grazing nearby? Experience the best of what the royal farm has to offer when it comes to food. Everything served comes from their own kitchen garden, the farm, or the dairy at Bygdøy. The dining area is set in a stunning large greenhouse, where it’s a real treat to sit outside or inside and gaze out over the vast fruit and vegetable garden. Here you’ll find dishes made from what they harvest on the farm, like focaccia sandwiches, ricotta, lasagna, exciting salads, and not least panna cotta and cheeses from the dairy. It’s a bit pricey (495 NOK per person), but all you can eat, and the quality is outstanding and truly defines farm-to-table dining! Open only during the summer, Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 to 16:30.

Håndbakt

A hip, organic and vegan sourdough bakery in Tøyen and at Lindern. In addition to a wide selection of coffee and fresh baked goods, they also serve brunch. We recommend trying the school bun here. It’s both fluffy and moist, topped with a generous layer of sweet icing! Pro tip, grab a coffee and a bun to go and enjoy a stroll through the nearby botanical garden. PS! Their bakery at Lindern is super charming.

Here you’ll find a warm and laid-back wine and food bar serving plenty of treats, including French-style pizza, Västerbotten cheese with roe and bone marrow tartare. If you really want to go all out, we highly recommend their entrecôte! For steak lovers, this is a seriously great dining experience with a whole kilo of meat from Galicia, Spain. It’s served on the bone with delicious chimichurri, aioli and crispy fries. It’s a bit pricey but perfect for sharing! The interior blends historic stucco with dark walls, concrete floors, vintage records and green plants. It creates a warm and hip vibe and is definitely a spot we’ve always loved! Grünerløkka’s perhaps liveliest food bar, serving up seasonal small plates with a cool bar vibe! You absolutely have to try their famous cheddar and jalapeño toast. They have quite a reputation for this! From the lunch menu, the Vitello Tonnato is a great pick, featuring thinly sliced veal, tuna mayonnaise, salad, parmesan, and toasted bread. Lunch is served until 3:30 pm daily and until 5 pm on Sundays. The evening menu offers dishes like tagliatelle with lobster, tartare, and ling (fish). Oyster lovers will also find options at friendly prices. The wine list focuses mainly on organic and natural wines. We keep coming back because of the laid-back yet elegant feel, paired with an energetic atmosphere. It’s especially popular in the summer when the sunny outdoor seating really shines!

Smalhans

A natural gathering spot on St. Hanshaugen since 2012! Smalhans is the place for flavorful shared meals, natural wine and that true neighborhood vibe. They even earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in 2015 for serving great, tasty food at a friendly price. With a focus on Norwegian ingredients, they offer three different concepts throughout the day: lunch, ‘Dagens husmann’ (today’s traditional dish) and a couple of set menus for sharing in the afternoon and evening. The interior is framed by vintage wallpaper, dark wooden furniture and green plants. ‘Dagens husmann’ is especially popular and helps put them high on our list of great traditional dining spots in Oslo.
