About Contrast

About Contrast

This bar plays with contrasts, where elegance and playfulness go hand in hand, and it is impossible not to be fascinated by what is served. The cocktail menu is inspired by well known expressions and sayings, such as 'No bad weather, just bad clothes' and 'Don’t judge a book by its cover'. When we visited last, we chose 'Never Give Up' and 'Morning Hustle'. The latter had a distinct smoky flavor and was served in a “bird’s nest” (yes, you read that right), topped with a gummy worm. During the day they serve coffee, pastries and sandwiches, before the space transforms into a cocktail bar in the evening.

Anam Cara

Anam Cara

A bar with its heart in the right place! This warm and inviting cocktail and wine bar is built around the concept of “soul friend.” The name Anam Cara is pre-Celtic and means “soulmate,” which is exactly the feeling they hope to give you here. They offer a great selection of wines and a truly unique cocktail menu inspired by various immigrant cultures in the US. Extra praise goes to their excellent mocktail menu! The interior features colorful touches—greens, terracotta and wooden furniture—that create a cozy, welcoming vibe.

Bar Lupo

Bar Lupo

Perfect for a date night! The menu here is inspired by the Venetian bacaro bars, small and informal wine bars that serve cicchetti (small dishes), which are perfect for sharing. We were two people and were recommended to share two snack dishes, two to three small plates and one or two pasta dishes. A perfect amount. Their veal and pork meatballs were full of flavour, and we ended up dipping focaccia into the tomato sauce once the meatballs were gone. The focaccia was crispy around the edges and the olives had just the right amount of heat. The grilled quail was tender, the cheese Ubriaco di rosso was lovely, and their endive and radicchio salad with anchovy and walnuts was also very good. To finish, a bowl of casarecce arrived. A ten hour onion ragu full of sweetness, depth and perfect texture. Delicious. Inside this place you'll will find soft lighting, brick walls, candlelight and a warm atmosphere.

Daglig Brød

Daglig Brød

The craze for buns shows no sign of slowing, and you definitely don’t want to miss these cream buns in Gamlebyen! The toppings and unique flavors make this something you probably haven’t tried before. How about ‘Biscoff,’ ‘Blueberry and lemon curd,’ or ‘Banana, caramel and pecan’? Note: Cream buns are only sold on weekends. Here, Daglig Brød and Skrenten Pizza bring together two of the city’s delights with sourdough baking and creative pizza experiences. During the day, fill up on freshly baked bread, buns and pastries from Daglig Brød, while in the afternoon and evening, Skrenten serves up colorful, retro-inspired pizza vibes and an outdoor seating area almost as big as the inside.

Duken Bar & Pizza

Duken Bar & Pizza

Bar and pizza in the same sentence? We were sold immediately. This new spot on Grünerløkka combines the best of both worlds: great pizza and a laid-back bar vibe. It’s run by the same team behind Skovveien Bar & Pizza, which in itself is reason enough to stop by. The pizza menu isn’t huge but offers both classics and more creative options. We went for the 'Pepperoni' and the 'Szechuan Potato', a flavorful pizza with an Asian twist. We paired our meal with a glass of red wine, but they also have beer and various cocktails behind the bar. With a DJ setup near the entrance, it’s easy to imagine the vibe picking up as the evening goes on. So even if you only came for the pizza, chances are you’ll end up staying a little longer (with a glass or two).

Eff Eff Oyster and Wine Bar

Eff Eff Oyster and Wine Bar

Oysters are more popular than ever, and if there’s one place you can count on to serve them in all kinds of styles, it’s right here in Fredensborg. Alongside the delicate star of the menu, the space offers a maritime feel with sea inspired artwork on the ceiling and a bright, airy interior. In addition to plenty of great wine, the menu is kept short and sweet, focusing mainly on oysters with a few other small bites like pickled herring.

Langt Langt Borte

Langt Langt Borte

This bar has its very own charm and a down-to-earth vibe! Inside you step into a warm, butter-yellow room with red accents and a record player spinning Beatles and Oasis. Alongside beer and wine you will find cocktails with playful nods to the Norwegian heartland, like 'Je skar surfe på Einafjorden'. A tribute to the norwegian cult band Vazelina Bilopphøggers. There are plenty of other drinks worth trying too, like 'Peter’s Shandy', a crisp favorite that tastes a bit like a radler. If you get peckish, you can order small bites such as cheese, ham, olives, pickles or simply a bag of chips. Langt Langt Borte sits a little outside the city center, but its neighborhood charm and fun drinks will easily put a smile on your face. With plenty of outdoor seating, it is also the kind of place where you might just end up staying until long after the sun goes down.

Lasarett Matbar

Lasarett Matbar

A small neighbourhood restaurant with a big personality on Torshov! Inside, you’ll find just six tables, six bar stools, and a seasonal set menu that changes often based on Norwegian ingredients. Their philosophy is down-to-earth and fully committed to sustainability, with their own vegetable garden, local ingredients, near zero food waste, and even surplus egg whites donated to a nearby cocktail bar. The kitchen is tiny and does very few allergy adjustments. This is also the team behind Lasarett, close by, and one of our absolute favourite wine spots in Oslo. The wine list here is both clever and exciting, and they’re approved by Star Wine List, listed as a ‘White Star’. The whole experience may be small in size, but it’s big on flavour! In summertime, they also serve a simpler menu with small plates and drinks out on the pavement.

Little Wolf

Little Wolf

Homemade pasta, fresh fish, sun on the terrace and an open kitchen? Yes please. At the top of St Hanshaugen you’ll get a refreshing taste of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. There are plenty of small tables and chefs prepping away in the open kitchen. The menu is full of shareable small plates, with a recommendation of three to four dishes per person. With an intimate vibe, excellent service and delicious food, we’d say this place is perfect whether you’re out with friends or on a date.

[You can get a discount here with Oslo Explore] Create your very own ring from scratch! In Grünerløkka, you’ll find an intimate and creative jewelry workshop. Over four hours, you’ll learn to shape a wax ring, cast it in sand using molten tin, and then sand and polish it until it shines. The class and space are warm and social, with good music and room for around eight participants. The process is surprisingly meditative – and you’ll leave with a personal piece of jewelry the same day, beautifully packaged in a box.

Ugly Duckling

Ugly Duckling

Absolutely delicious! This small sandwich shop serves seriously tasty creations on brioche buns. Think duck confit with tangy red cabbage, pickles, and tarragon mayo, porchetta paired with fennel salad, or a meatball sub with habanero marinara and melted mozzarella. And don’t miss finishing off with their amazing chocolate chip cookie. Just saying.

Vadio

Vadio

A little slice of Portugal has arrived at Frogner! This modern restaurant brings together the very best of Portuguese culture and gastronomy. From the moment you walk in, you can feel that this is a place with a clear vision. And we love it! Behind it all is Nud Dudhia, known for great spots like Little Wolf, Pao, Dougs, and Breddos. You can choose from the à la carte menu or go for the set menu, and the prices are actually quite reasonable for the quality you get. And both the food and service were quite excellent on our last visit! The space feels warm and relaxed, and the concept tries to be a little fine dining, but without the snobbery.

Vinkassen

Vinkassen

The charming little wine bar is called Vinkassen, and that’s exactly what you’ll find inside – a big box filled with bottles available by the glass. After ten years working as chefs, two young Danes decided to open a local wine bar in Bislett, Oslo. Tired of all the cheese platters being served at the city’s wine bars, they wanted to create a spot with both great wine and proper food on the menu. Here you’ll always find a solid and varied selection by the glass, along with a food menu full of tempting small plates inspired by Italian, Spanish and French flavors.
