Right by Sofienbergparken, you’ll find this gastropub with a playful atmosphere filled with retro lamps, vintage frames and cozy sofas. It feels a little like home! The menu offers everything from snacks to full dinners, and the wine list is carefully curated and surprisingly good. Not so surprising though, since Alex, one of the owners, has previously held wine courses for Mer av Oslo. We can vouch for his expertise! Sometimes, quizzes and small concerts bring the lounge area to life, making the place even more inviting. In short, this spot is perfect for everyday relaxation or a weekend celebration, with warm sofas, great food and vibrant culture.

If you’re lucky, you might get to try whale tataki, sea bass with truffle sauce and hiramasa kingfish. It’s probably the priciest sushi option in town, but definitely worth every penny!

Arakataka

Arakataka

One of Oslo’s safest bets when you’re after seasonal, modern Norwegian cuisine. The restaurant strikes a fine balance between down-to-earth and polished. The walls are lined with modern art, the atmosphere is cozy and informal, but the plates arrive like small works of art. Choose from à la carte or a four- or six-course menu. It often starts light and green before moving into meat from Holte Gård, fresh fish, and seafood. On our last visit we went for the six-course and enjoyed tartare, squash with lovage and Amalfi lemon, corn with razor clams and chili, the catch of the day with mussels, chicken with wild mushrooms, and a refreshing apple dessert. Truly delicious from start to finish! The wine list is among the city’s finest, with a backbone of French regions like Jura, Champagne, Loire, and Burgundy, alongside German riesling favorites and Italian reds. If you want to keep it more casual, grab a spot in the bar area and order from the small plates menu instead.

Last time we visited, the selection included delicacies like fresh oysters, escargots, halibut, and grilled monkfish. They have quite a reputation for this! From the lunch menu, the Vitello Tonnato is a great pick, featuring thinly sliced veal, tuna mayonnaise, salad, parmesan, and toasted bread. Lunch is served until 3:30 pm daily and until 5 pm on Sundays. The evening menu offers dishes like tagliatelle with lobster, tartare, and ling (fish). Oyster lovers will also find options at friendly prices. The wine list focuses mainly on organic and natural wines. We keep coming back because of the laid-back yet elegant feel, paired with an energetic atmosphere. It’s especially popular in the summer when the sunny outdoor seating really shines!

Skovveien Bar & Pizza

Skovveien Bar & Pizza

This bar and pizza restaurant is easily one of the most popular spots in Frogner and definitely worth the visit. The first thing you’ll see when you walk in is the open bar, and both the pizza and the atmosphere here are top notch. They don’t hold back on quality ingredients or creativity, so you’ll find plenty of exciting flavor combos on the menu. Our favorite is the one with seasonal tomatoes, packed with rich flavor and topped with a creamy burrata in the center. The space is divided into several cozy rooms and there’s outdoor seating for sunny days.

Smalhans

Smalhans

A natural gathering spot on St. Hanshaugen since 2012! Smalhans is the place for flavorful shared meals, natural wine and that true neighborhood vibe. They even earned a Bib Gourmand from the Michelin Guide in 2015 for serving great, tasty food at a friendly price. With a focus on Norwegian ingredients, they offer three different concepts throughout the day: lunch, ‘Dagens husmann’ (today’s traditional dish) and a couple of set menus for sharing in the afternoon and evening. The interior is framed by vintage wallpaper, dark wooden furniture and green plants. ‘Dagens husmann’ is especially popular and helps put them high on our list of great traditional dining spots in Oslo.

Smia Galleri

Smia Galleri

In Vålerenga, inside an old smithy from 1878, you’ll find this beautiful and historic courtyard restaurant. Or perhaps more accurately, a front-yard restaurant! The outdoor seating overlooking Vålerenga Park and the church is truly one of a kind, nestled in a cozy courtyard surrounded by beautiful scenery. The atmosphere stays warm and rustic all year round, with brick walls, colorful stained glass windows and decorative stucco. They serve lunch, à la carte and their own three, four and five-course menus. Jazz nights here are a must-try, especially when they serve their famous “jazz soup” alongside the music. Fun!

Sparta

Sparta

This is the place to drop by for a whole baked camembert, or even order a little bowl of candy with your wine. Just because you can! Cheese, wine, and long evenings are always a classic. What started out as a great wine bar with snacks has, after its success, expanded into a full food bar too. The menu is tempting and we’ve enjoyed dishes like crab salad and halibut with fennel and beurre blanc. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with high ceilings, rust-red walls, and soft lighting. And while they’ve always been known for their wide range of wines, the cocktails here are just as impressive!

Never been to Svovelstikka before? You’re not alone. This isn’t exactly a place you stumble upon by chance. Tucked away at Fyrstikktorget in Helsfyr, it’s a quietly charming neighborhood spot with plenty of soul and a well-hidden gem. As soon as you step into the square, you’re surrounded by warm brown brick walls that give the place a cozy, inviting, and historic vibe. The menu offers both lunch and dinner options, including Reef & Beef with tenderloin, shrimp, and calamari, as well as burgers, salads, soups, and various gyros. Szechuan Chengdu

Fiery peppercorns, a slightly worn interior and top tier food. Make no mistake, this place is absolutely worth the long standing hype. And don’t forget to ask about the secret menu. The selection ranges from classics like spring rolls and dumplings to crispy duck and fried rice or noodles – all familiar favorites. The only thing they have in common with most Chinese restaurants in town is the massive and extensive menu. The space might not scream Michelin, but this is without a doubt a spot you need to check out.

Tabuno

Tabuno

Enjoy Filipino flavors and Norwegian ingredients in elegant surroundings! The restaurant is led by Ivy Tabuno Solheim, a Norwegian-Filipino chef who previously worked at Betong, Hot Shop and Katla. The team from Betong is also involved, so you can expect an intimate dining experience with a changing menu and a small but thoughtful wine list to match the kitchen. For now, there’s only one set menu to order. Their veal tongue skewer with confit egg yolk and pineapple ponzu, and not least the duck with peach, were absolutely outstanding. Think clean flavors, precise sauces, and a strong focus on produce. The atmosphere is stylish yet grounded, with green surfaces and soft lighting. You can also get very good Filipino food at Kain Neo-Filipino Bistro in the city center, but this spot feels a touch more refined.

Trattoria Popolare

Trattoria Popolare

An Italian summer favorite and trattoria tucked away at the bottom of Grünerløkka. Here, you can enjoy fresh pasta, a large wine selection (featuring over 600 Italian varieties), and a cozy atmosphere right by the sidewalk. Just like at a true trattoria! The outdoor seating is definitely a local favorite, but indoors it’s equally charming with wooden paneling, plants, and wine bottles as decor. They serve lunch during the day and a more tailored dinner menu in the evening. Choose from pasta dishes like linguini, ravioli, or the risotto options, alongside the catch of the day fish and meat options. We keep coming back every summer for a reason. PS! The oxtail ravioli is recommended!

[You can get a discount here with Oslo Explore] There’s no doubt this is one of the best Italian spots in the city, and a well crafted pizza straight from the stone oven or a plate of delicious pasta never disappoints. The owner, Francesco Solimeo, has won the Norwegian championship for best gourmet pizza, but the Italian chef clearly knows his way around more than just pizza. Try the tasting menu for a generous and truly lovely Italian dining experience. The space is filled with warm tones and Italian decor. ZZ Pizza

ZZ Pizza

A true gem in Gamlebyen for anyone craving seriously good pizza with a sourdough base and perfectly crispy crust. Their 'Løksuppepizza' (French onion soup) as a pizza has become a hit and for good reason. It is right up there, possibly the best in town, with oxtail broth, 36-month gouda, smoked raclette, and thyme. You will of course also find classics like 'Pepperoni', 'Chili Cheese', and 'Mortadella', as well as more creative options such as 'Coppa & Burrata', 'Guanciale & Pecorino', and 'Oxtail & Gochujang'. In other words, plenty of goodness to choose from. The space is raw and urban, with high ceilings, wooden benches, and an industrial vibe.
